Medical Council of India (MCI) Screening Test is also known as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). It is a national level licensure examination conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) twice a year. This is an important exam for the candidates who have studied medical courses in abroad, i. e., outside India and want to start their career here in India.

However, there is another requirement for their smooth practice of medicine in India. They also have to practice an year's internship from a teaching hospital or medical college in India. It must be taken into consideration that the hospital from where the candidate is taking internship in India must be recognized by the Medical Council of India. This internship can be done outside India also. However, the relevant internship certificate must be attested by the Indian Mission Embassy or Consulate office present in that country.

The system of Screening Test was introduced in 2002. It is a kind of qualifying examination for the students who pursued their medical degree from the countries outside India. These countries include Soviet Union, Nepal, China, Eastern European countries, Philippines, Caribbean countries, and many more. This Screening test is highly compulsory for the Indian doctors holding any basic medical degree from outside India. However, the medical institution from where you obtained the degree must be listed in the WHO International Directory of Medical Schools.

Note— The students who took admission in abroad on or after 15. 03. 2002 must have to obtain an Eligibility Certificate” from the Medical Council of India. However, this is not required for the Indian students who took admission before 15. 03. 2002.

This examination is done in English only.

There is no negative marking in this examination.

The centre of the examination is New Delhi.

The examination occurs twice a year in the months of June and December. And that too on the last Sunday of these months.

There are 300 multiple choice questions in the exam sheet divided into two sittings of 150 questions each. Obviously, these MCQs are single response type answers.

The qualifying marks is 50% or more. This means that for passing this examination you have to gain at least 50% (or more) of the total marks.

The results are displayed in the official website of NBE can also be obtained from the office of NBE. There is no any provision of rechecking or retotalling or re-evaluation of the marks obtained in the test.

However, there is no limits or restrictions to the number of attempts in the test. You can apply again and again, if did not get success in your previous tests.

Eligibility certificate issued by MCI, if available (issued for the students joined on or after 15. 03. 2019.

If the certificates are issued in a language other than Hindi or English, then these documents must be translated into Hindi or English. Thereafter, the certificate is submitted in the end.

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a professional examination which occurs in different part. USMLE is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examination (NBME). Step 3

The USMLE were taken in paper previously. Afterwards, the mode changed and is taken via computer based multiple- choice pattern. The exams are taken at the parametric test centres worldwide. However, the Step 2 CS and CK held only in USA.

Step 1

This is the part of the USMLE. Step 1 gives the idea about the medical school graduates or students’ knowledge regarding the fundamental concepts of science. These concepts are related to the practice of medicine. Generally, students take Step 1 during the end of the second year of the medical school. However, Graduates from international medical colleges can also proceed for Step 1, if they want to practice medicine in the USA.

Step 2 CS

Step 2 emphasizes on the practical knowledge of the medical students and is categorized into two separate sections of examination:

1) Step 2— CK (Clinical Knowledge)

This also comes under the second part of the USMLE and focuses on the clinical skills of the candidates through simulated patient interactions. In this exam, you, as an examiner, have to interact with 12 Standardized Patients (SPs), portrayed by actors, and obtain a complete and clear history and take clinical examination of them. You will be given 15 minutes for each patient’s assessment. After that, 10 extra minutes will be given to prepare the patient note. In this note, you have to mention the findings, initial differential diagnosis list and a list of initial lists. The administration of this part began in 2004. Step 3

This is the final step in the series of United States Medical Licensing Examination. Basically, clearing this part is a major terms of the state licensing board. The UK Clinical Aptitude Test is an admission test used as a selection process and is meant for the medical and dental degree programs. It is also known as University Clinical Aptitude Test. It is used by a consortium of Universities in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. However, it runs on a collaborative working process of UKCAT Consortium with Pearson VUE. Though UKCAT was introduced in 2006, yet it was kept for test for some years.

This test gives the idea about the candidate’s attitudes, mental abilities and possible professional behaviour. The test centres are located worldwide including EU. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and New Delhi (Yusuf Sarai) are the centres for UKCAT in India. This test helps the universities to be more particular between the medical and dental applicants. UKCAT is compulsory for UK, EU and majority of international applicants.

You are allowed to sit for one time in an year (in one cycle) for the exam. However, in case, if you are unsuccessful in getting admission in the medical school, you have to apply for the UKCAT again for the following year. However, if you fail to appear for the exam within the stipulated time and apply for any program, where this test needed, you will be certainly rejected for that application. Only when you are exempted from the UKCAT, then only there are chances to get allowed for the said application .

This exemption is based on geographical terms. Like, if you live in a country where there is no test centres in your country, then you are exempted from this examination. However, before asking for your exemption, make sure that there is no test centres for UKCAT in your country. To apply for exemption, you have to fill the form given in the official portal relevant to exemption. After considering the application, an exemption number is given to the applicants via email for their easy admission in medical schools without appearing in the UKCAT. However, you have to meet all the criteria before applying for the exemption.

The UKCAT authorities will inform you about list of medical schools where you can apply. You don’t need to put efforts to search for any medical or dental schools. You about the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) for overseas qualified or qualification not recognized in the UK doctors who want to practice medicine in the UK must register with the General Medical Council (GMC) Before coming to the UK, they must pass a pre-assessment International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. This is designed to find out if the doctor has a reasonable command of the English language before they can sit the PLAB test. IELTS tests can be taken in various countries, including the UK.

If the doctor passes the different stages of the test, they can sit the PLAB test in the UK. Doctors must take the PLAB test to demonstrate their knowledge of medical English and their medical skills and knowledge. The PLAB test consists of two separate assessments, part 1 and part 2. The GMC requires doctors to pass part 1 before they can take part 2 of the test. If a candidate fails part 1 by a wide margin, the GMC does not allow them to reset part 1 for a period of at least four months from the date of the failed test.

Part 1 is a computer-marked written examination consisting of single best answer (SBA) questions. The paper contains 200 questions and may contain images. It lasts three hours. You can have an unlimited number of attempts but you must pass Part 1 within two years of the date of your IELTS certificate or the date we specify when accepting alterative evidence of your proficiency in English.

Part 2 is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). It is made up of:

One or more pilot stations run for statistical purposes, where the marks do not count towards your result.

Each station lasts five minutes. You must pass Part 2 within three years of passing Part 1. You can have four attempts at Part 2. Print out the IELTS Application Form or ask your test centre for a copy. Read the information for candidates, terms and conditions complete the form and sign it. Please make sure you have a valid postal address and use the same name as on your passport.

Organize two identical passport-sized color photographs, less than six months old, and sign the back of each. You must not wear glasses in your application photographs. Take a photocopy of your current passport this must be valid and not expired (some centers will accept a national identity card).
